Decorating a "Powder Room"...why's it called that anyway?
I have come to a complete and screeching halt in the decorating process......and my arch nemesis has a name: The Powder Room. I guess they called it that back in the 50's when women were always needing to "powder their noses". Who has time to do that now-a-days? On to my decorating debaucle.....
First of all, there's a really pretty pedestal sink in there, with a gorgeous light fixture and oval mirror. Across the way, is the "ahem" sitting area, and that's about it. It's obvious to me that I need to pull the color scheme from my foyer and family room, since it's right there....but that's where my balloon loses it's helium! Do you take a small room, and paint it dark, thus risking the "users" feeling like they've fallen into a hole? Or do you paint it light, and make the males feel uneasy in such fluff?
I've settled on my color--a grayish lavender hue, that's called "Silver Service" (by Olympic Paints). Now what? Are those little cabinets that fit so nicely over the "seating area" too terribly tacky? I sure hope not, because I have GOT to have some place to put extra rolls of Charmin!!
Now, what kind of "wall art" do we use in a tiny room? A big picture of a hunting dog? No. A couple of Orchid Prints? No. Just how do we make everyone who goes in there feel comfortable? I thought of doing a Trompe L'Oeil of a window overlooking a vineyard....but do people really want to feel like the "village might catch a glimpse"?
I think I'll venture out this week, and try to find something abstract....no flowers, no animals, no "scenes", just "Ahhhh...".
Meanwhile, I'll just tell people it's an extra coat closet.
